Translating Thai as an expat in Thailand
Pood Thai is a LINE account that translates Thai and English in both directions, inside the chat, for everyone in it.
Where people put it
You add it as a friend, then either message it directly or invite it into a chat. Four places cover almost everyone:
- ·The chat with your girlfriend or boyfriend. They write Thai, you write English, both of you read your own language, without either of you changing how you type.
- ·Friend groups. Where dinner gets decided in four messages. You read them as they happen and can answer in English without making everyone switch.
- ·Your landlord and the building group. Water shutoffs, repairs, rent. Read the notice the day it goes out, and report a broken air conditioner so it actually gets fixed.
- ·A direct chat with the bot itself. Ask how to say something and you get the Thai plus the phonetic spelling with tone marks, so you can say it out loud.
Pronunciation in direct messages
In a direct message, Pood Thai adds the Paiboon+ phonetic underneath the translation. Group chats do not get this, deliberately - a phonetic line under every message would bury the conversation. So the DM becomes the place you work things out before you say them.
The tone marks are the part that matters. Thai road-sign romanization leaves them out, which is why sounding a word out from a street sign usually does not work.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do expats in Thailand usually handle Thai messages?
Most copy the message out of LINE, paste it into Google Translate, read it, and switch back. It works for one message and falls apart across a busy group chat, which is why a lot of people simply stop reading their Thai groups.
Do I need to speak Thai to use Pood Thai?
No. You write in English and the people in the chat read Thai. Pood Thai handles both directions, so neither side has to change how they type.
Will my Thai friends and family need to install anything?
No. You add the bot to the chat once and everyone in it gets the translations. Nobody else signs up, pays, or installs an app - which matters in family and building groups where you cannot ask everyone to change tools.
Does it handle the Thai people actually type?
That is the point. Chat Thai is full of particles, shortened spellings, slang, and English words in Thai script. Pood Thai handles only Thai and English, and is told to preserve slang and politeness rather than translate word for word.
Can I use it to write Thai, not just read it?
Yes. Type your message in English and Pood Thai posts the Thai in the chat, so you can reply to your landlord or your partner's family in a language they read comfortably.
